The Tower – XVI

Known also as the Lord of the Hosts of the Mighty and ruled by Mars, the card of The Tower is one of those cards from the Tarot that we often dread - it brings upheaval, subversiveness and destruction of the old order to ring in something entirely new.

If you are a person who likes things to run smoothly and pretty much as they've always done, then this news will not fill your heart with joy. But if you can smell the winds of change coming, and know that this is what has been missing and that the old ways don't cut it anymore, then you will be very happy to see this card.

Don't get me wrong, it is not bringing a transition of ease and comfort. Oh no! There is always a period of adjustment when this card comes along, since if we are honest, there is always a part of us that clings to the way things were and have been, even though the levels of discomfort  have become all but unbearable.

If we amplify the symbol of The Tower, we find references to it in stories and literature. The Ivory Tower, the Tower of Babel and Rapunzel's Tower are a few that spring to mind.

Living in an Ivory Tower one is said to be divorced from reality, and having one's head in the clouds. If you are not operating in the agreed reality, then there will be those who wish to crumble your tower and bring you back down to earth.

The Tower of Babel was ultimately unsuccessful since the builders suffered from the hubris of thinking they could reach heaven via this construction - they forgot their humanity and humility and therefore were punished by God by losing their ability to communicate with each other and were scattered upon the earth.

And you may recall that Rapunzel was imprisoned in a Tower and hence removed from the earth, with no escape except for her long hair (hair is a symbol for thoughts or the intellect) so she also did not have a grounded connection with reality, just concepts that were not based in reality.  Some people however, say reality is highly over-rated. Sometimes it takes someone to be willing to get out of our agreed reality for a while to really start the ball rolling.

This card reminds me of the Precession of the Equinoxes - we are currently transitioning from the Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius which means the old order is becoming obsolete and soon departing, while the new order - that of social conscience, technological advances and social ideals  take precedence, and will see many who are married to the old institutions, structures and ways of doing business eventually go the way of the dinosaurs = that Tower is crumbling. Each precession takes over 2000 years, and so it is a slow process, but the wheels do turn and yet sometimes the evidence of progress is unmistakable.

There is a pattern from the past where upheavals, subversion of established norms, and sudden changes were experienced  frequently, due to an inability to sit idly by when what was happening was clearly wrong. It is likely that punishment was meted out for speaking your truth, which could have the effect of being unwilling or afraid to stand up for what you believe is right since you were punished drastically for doing so in the past. Expect the unexpected (although to be truthful, the unexpected is often not as unexpected as you think).
