The card of The Lovers is the Children of the Voice and Oracle of the Mighty Gods. It is ruled by Gemini and represents duality, choices and union of opposites.
Gemini is the sign of the Twins, Castor & Pollux, the Dioscuri, who were so inseparable that when the mortal Castor was slain, Pollux begged Zeus to place them together in the heavens  so they would be forever united.
Traditionally this card represents finding a Soul Mate, or special love interest that will satisfy our romantic ideas and lead to happily ever after. Â We either find new relationships or have the opportunity to take our existing relationship to deeper and more satisfying levels.
This is the mundane perspective of The Lovers, the card that every hopeful boy or girl will find granted by the Oracle. But the initial stages of love, or the in-love state is really a premature and incomplete state of love. It is only when we recognise our own dual nature and the dual nature of the beloved, where we compensate for their failings and they for ours, that we can acknowledge both our perfections and our imperfections and come to a delightful understanding of the follies inherent in love stories!
When we meet The Lovers card, we meet the secret shadow part of ourselves that we do not recognise and so must find in another in order to experience love fully. This is not a romance story, it is a Mystery that leads to the realisation of our wholeness, to what we had before the Fall and lost afterwards.
The Lovers also represents a choice, since committing oneself to Love often means sacrifice of some other part of life. We need to trust the heart that it will guide us true, and once a choice is made to never look back and regret what else might have been.
There is a chance to try something new, to depart from the safe and sure path that others follow with their heads and intellect. Your heart is calling you to make a different choice, one that will surprise, alarm and delight you. Time to open your eyes to the different choices life offers you.
