The Four of Cups is the Lord of Blended Pleasure and is aligned with Moon in Cancer. It represents detachment, introspection and willingness to hold out for what you know is right for you.
Fours are foundational numbers, so they tend to solidify the energy embodied in the initial cards of the Suit, in this case Cups. Cups deal with the emotional dimension, and so when the Four of Cups turns up in a reading, there is a difficult blending of the fluid element of Water (Cups) and the solid structure of the Four. This brings uncertainty, disillusion and confusion, especially where the feelings are concerned. There is an unwillingness to try new things on an emotional level - there is a feeling of being stuck in old patterns and refusing to shift.
Sometimes one feels that it is better to stick with a situation, no matter how painful, because at least it is a known quality. Changing brings uncertainty and fear of pain and disconnection, which you have come to believe is to be avoided at all costs. But without a willingness to change old patterns, life goes on in the same old way, day in and day out.
In relationships, there is a reluctance to risk your heart, since it has been hurt in the past and so you have grown a protective shell around it that is meant to prevent any pain or loss from entering. But the problem with this approach is that it becomes inflexible and unable to take a chance when a chance is needed.
It is time to re-evaluate past decisions, in relationships, both personal and professional, to practice forgiveness, empathy and understanding for others. In other words, turn the energy that is facing inwards towards the outside and offer what you feel you are lacking to those who need it as they are drawn into your life now.
